Impact of IoT Monitoring in Fish Farming: A Comprehensive Systematic and Bibliometric Review
Abstract
Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring is transforming fish farming towards a more sustainable practice, thanks to the automation and simplification of data management. This process captures a range of environmental parameters, such as temperature and water quality, thus improving the management of aquacultural spaces. This evolution promises to increase production, raise product quality, and reduce operational costs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the repercussions of IoT monitoring in fish farming, assessing both positive and negative influences, through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) covering the period from 2017 to 2023 and examining databases such as Scopus, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and ACM Digital Library. Applying rigorous exclusion criteria — discarding papers older than seven years, not in English, not published in peer-reviewed conferences or journals, not available in full text, or not offering specific solutions for aquaculture — 60 significant papers were selected from a total of 2569. The results indicate that IEEE Xplore is the dominant source within the retrieved literature and that the journal Sensors appears frequently among the selected studies, with a notable contribution from Asian countries. This work reveals crucial discoveries about the application of IoT in aquaculture and its varied contexts of use.
