Abstract

Water resource management is animportant issue that involves several factors such aseconomics, social, politician, among others, for itsadequate administration. Water can be classifiedaccording to its usage purposes since it is usedfor human consumption, industrial usage, agriculture, etc. Thus, correct strategies to manage this vitalliquid are essential to effectively use it. Thispaper studies water management from a mathematicaloptimization approach by considering factors andconstraints that may suit real-world conditions. Theproposed mathematical model is based on the classicaltransportation problem, which is well-known in theliterature. We perform an empirical evaluation of theproposed model using off-the-shelf optimization softwareover a set of proposed instances, and the results showthe feasibility of the proposal. Finally, we discuss thefaced challenges in the research and possible futureresearch directions that may help the management ofwater resources from a computational approach.
